Adios Caffeine

For as long as I can remember, or at least the last ten years anyway, I’ve averaged about 5-6 hours a night of sleep. I can fall asleep at the drop of a hat (which irritates my wife to no end as it can take her hours to fall asleep) and I very rarely use an alarm clock even if I have to get up at 4:00AM. In those cases I almost always set an alarm but wake up myself at like 3:58. The extra 2 or 3 hours a day I then have over others sleeping a more normal 7-8 hours has made a big difference for me in terms of being able to find the time to balance family, work and play.

Also for as long as I can remember, probably the last ten years, I’ve imbibed a pot or two of coffee a day in the morning and maybe three or four Mountain Dews in the afternoon. A couple of weeks ago I stopped in-taking caffeine. No more coffee (sorry, no way I’ll touch decaf) and Caffeine-free Dew for me now. Bottled water in the morning.

The reaction from my body was pretty immediate - I was violently ill after the first day, but then that was about it. It takes me longer to wake up in the morning - I find myself wanting to sleep in a little. My wife actually had to wake me up at 6:30 the other day so I wouldn’t be late for work. And I’ve been sleeping 8 hours a night. This is all so new and I can’t decide if that’s good or bad yet.

I’ve also cut down on the alcohol, to 1 or 2 beers a week. That most definitely is bad.

  1. That is kinda weird — I’d think, after a few years, your body would have built a tolerance for caffeine, and you wouldn’t be so “energetic”.

FWIW, I average less than one Coke’s worth of caffeine per day and if I drink a cup of coffee, I feel like Cornholio.

  2. Am I being too forward by asking WHY you’re saying adios?

  3. Appropriate question coming from the “Fat Guy” :-)

  5. [...] Adios Caffeine - Wow, it’s been five years since I stopped drinking pots of coffee a day. I still drink a little coffee now and then but mostly it’s decaf to me - and it’s made a huge difference in how much sleep I get now. [...]
