salesforce.com has long offered free 30 day trials of its hosted CRM software but now they offer a free subscription called Personal Edition to anyone who wants one. While limited in functionality compared to the paid offerings the feature set is rich enough to get a good taste for what salesforce.com can offer while actually providing some pretty strong account, contact, task and opportunity management for a free solution.

As budgets remain tight and tales of long drawn out CRM implementations become prevalent the hosted CRM space becomes very interesting. Projects will be smaller and will start at the department level and the winner will be the company who can get entrenched there. By introducing a free service like Personal Edition salesforce.com is showing they know how to dig in.
