The Wrong Side Of The Bed

by john on June 20, 2004

What side of the bed do you sleep on? I sleep on the right side but my family insists that is the left side. They say the left side is to your left as you are facing the bed and I say you refer to sides based on when you are using the bed. If you refer to a person’s right side you do so with the perspective of the individual, not the individual facing them. When you report to your insurance company that your right front fender is crumpled you do so with respect to how you are sitting in the car. Hell there is even a word for this – starboard, which is a nautical term for the right side of the ship- the right side from the perspective of the captain of the ship, not some land lubber looking at the ship coming in.

So when you are lounging in bed watching your Tivo if you right arm is hanging over the edge of the bed then you are on the right side of the bed despite what anyone says.

Sometimes you just have to stand up for the little things. Like which side is really the right.

I agree with you. I sleep on the left side … i.e. when I’m lying down, the middle of the mattress is along my right arm.
