Some sad news on the day when the door to space tourism opened with the claiming of the “Ansari X-Prize”:http://www.xprize.org/ by “SpaceShipOne”:http://www.scaled.com/projects/tierone/ – Mercury Seven astronaut Gordon Cooper “has died”:http://www.reuters.com/newsArticle.jhtml?type=peopleNews&storyID=6410744 at 77.

“Red | Blue”:http://www.gravitymonkey.com/gravity/monkey/redblue/ is an application for your Java-enabled phone that takes your location (either via GPS or hand-entered) and provides a graphical Geiger counter-like display showing the political leanings of where you are at. Fun combination of data and GPS. Unfortunately I was not able to get it installed on my Blackberry, something on Handango it didn’t like. Looks cool though. [via Gadgetopia]

“Best Buy”:http://www.bestbuy.com has “come out with their own line”:http://arstechnica.com/news/posts/20041004-4269.html of computers. While I have built the last dozen or so computers I have owned (dang that sounds like I lot but I have 6 running at home right now) I would definitely take a look at these because I like browsing at Best Buy and I am a shareholder.

Speaking of shares, “GOOG”:http://finance.yahoo.com/q?s=goog is up to $135. Could have been bought at auction at $85. Could have been bought on the open market at $100. Hindsight being 20/20 I would have rather bought then than this week, but I did anyway. Just a nibble.

Amazon has introduced an update version of the “E-Commerce Server”:http://www.amazon.com/gp/browse.html/002-1564395-8233626?node=12738641 web service and introduced the “Alexa”:http://www.amazon.com/gp/browse.html/002-1564395-8233626?node=12782661 web service. I anticipate some interesting uses popping up with these – unfortunately I’m way too busy to try something myself right now.

Ever had a Grapple? That’s an apple that promises to taste like a grape. I had three of them today. And I’ll be darned but they do taste like grapes. Not nearly as tasty as a Honeycrisp, but still pretty good.
