This month, poker players from around the world will flood Casino Barriere d’Enghien-les-Bains for the World Series of Poker Europe. The 100-year-old casino on the outskirts of Paris will provide the backdrop for the 2013 WSOP Europe’s first High Rollers no limit Hold’em tournament. Eight WSOP gold bracelets are up for grabs at the event dubbed “Baguettes and Bracelets; Champagne and Cash”.

Poker at the lakeside casino will be a nice change of pace, especially for online players who stare at computer screens day in and day out. WSOP Europe hopefuls will stay at one of two hotels on the property, Grand-Hotel-Barriere and Hotel du Lac. They’re famous for their geothermal hot springs, and have become popular spa destinations. Tourists have long been drawn here for the healing power the baths are known for. When a table massage just won’t cut it, the geothermal hot springs as well as an assortment of soothing and rejuvenating body treatments are waiting at the spa.

What better way to shed some tension before grinding all day in WSOP Europe’s eight tournament events and non-stop cash games. The WSOP Europe runs Oct. 11 – 25, giving players who elect to stick it out two full weeks to take in the surroundings. Expect to see a long list of top name contenders vying for the money, the title, and to move up the rankings in the race for player of the year.

The High Roller Tournament will start near the end of week two, followed only by the Main Event. Camera’s will be present to broadcast both games on ESPN and Eurosport TV. Televised tournaments will be held in the casino’s newly renovated 500 seat theatre. Most of the tournament play will take place in a convention center across from the hotel. Last year, Phil Hellmuth won the 2012 WSOP Europe Main Event, his 13th bracelet, and $1.4 million.

Players competing in the new High Rollers no limit Hold’ em Tournament, will pay a €25,600 buy-in, or about $34,000. The ones who bust out early have the option to rebuy, and everyone can add on. Other bracelet events include the Ladies Texas Hold ’em(No-Limit), Mixed-Max No limit Hold ‘ em and Pot Limit Omaha.

When the games let out, there’s a lot to see in this stylish two-story casino. There’s a catch though, the casino has a dress code. Tee-shirts, shorts , sneakers and open toe shoes are out. Cross jeans off the list if your plans include a bar or restaurant. I wonder where the casino stands on ball caps?

Make it to the casino floor, and you’ll find several variations on the game Roulette, Blackjack, Stud Poker, Punto Banco and an abundance of slot machines. Gamble enough and receive a personal invitation to the exclusive Salon des Princes. The salon has a bar and offers a quiet space for high-stakes gamblers to play away from the commotion on the casino floor. In season, the salon has access to a beautiful terrace overlooking the lake.

With less than two weeks until the games begin, the WSOP is literally counting down the minutes with a live counter on its website. Casino Barriere d’Enghien-les-Bains has a poker site of its own. In 2010, it joined the world of internet gaming, and Barriere went online.
